Who is The Paper Bluebird?
The simplest answer that question is that it’s me, Elizabeth Brown! Years ago, I started a little Etsy shop as a creative outlet, and I called it The Paper Bluebird because 1) I made little paper origami boxes and paper tags and 2) my daughter’s nickname was Bluebird. As my shop (and my interests) progressed, I imagined having a little brick and mortar store called The Paper Bluebird. Even though my dreams have evolved and I’m no longer looking for a physical location, the name has never changed.
So the next question becomes “Who is Elizabeth Brown?”
That’s a good question. I’m in my early 40s and there are so many days where I feel like I still haven’t figured that out yet.
I grew up in Washington State in the shadow of the Cascades, but I currently live in ocean-less Arizona. Having lived near both the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans, I have grown to love all things about the sea. Give me a foggy morning and an old lighthouse and I’m a happy gal. Add some whales and you’ve found your way to my heart. You’ll definitely see those things play a heavy influence in my art, not only as the subject matter of my pieces (whales and lighthouses anyone?), but also in my preferred color pallet.
As much as I gravitate towards coastal pieces, I’m not afraid to mix it up. My newest endeavor is my graphic arts shop, full of funky designs available on apparel, drinkware and stickers. My recent series Floral Refrains is a mash up of music I love with art I created. Music is another heavy influence in my life and I’ve got a playlist for every season, every feeling. I grew up playing piano and guitar and sometimes I’ve been known to pick up a ukulele and make up a jingle. Some of my happiest moments are attending concerts with my sister.
When I’m not painting or listening to music (or doing both at the same time), I’m reading! Books have been my constant companion, and my first true love. One of my all time favorite books is The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexander Dumas.
On top of all that, I’m an Enneagram 4, an INFJ and sometimes I’m a handful. I love that art gives me a place to put all these feelings. It’s an incredibly intimate experience when others find meaning and beauty in something I create, and I love that it’s part of who I am.
